Erica Komisar had an op-ed in the WSJ on Jan 17, 2019 in which she dissented from the American Psychological Association’s recent guidelines on treating traditional masculinity in a psychoanalytic setting. Komisar is a practicing analyst who gives parentimg workshops and is a life coach. She quotes from the guidelines: “traditional masculinity –marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression — is, on the whole, harmful.” She says that the “APA claims that masculinity is to blame for the oppression and abuse of women. The report encourages clinicians to evaluate masculinity as an evil to be tamed rather than a force to be integrated.”
She wonders how the biological foundation of masculinity and femininity can be simply discarded as cultural construction. Testasterone is a real factor in determining male character. Expect strength, even aggression and the alpha-beta dance of males as they figure out their characters and their place in society. I’m confounded by parents who try to raise a child without gender identity.
I’m going to jump to religious argument here. Don’t leave, please. In the beginning “God made them to his image and likeness, male and female He made them.” The loneliness of Adam as he names the beings God has created to live in the garden with him is so urgent that God determines to use Adam’s own flesh to fashion a companion, a woman. Now, Adam is not alone anymore and the passion to love of the new couple will continue to create new life, children of both their souls.
Individual men and women find their identity in each other as they “fall in love.” Diversity of sexual habitation is not part of the plan. For this reason, a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and they become one entity. Two genders, two sexes, one being when they embrace one another for life.
No amount of discussion will change the DNA of a person and it dictates whether a person is male or female. There are biological exceptions but for the vast majority of human beings “It’s a girl!” and ‘It’s a boy!” pretty much covers the field of gender. Male and female he created them. You can look it up.
