It was nearly Spring. My early morning walk was along a dirt path which followed the meandering of a creek. It’s waters ran cold and fast as it flowed over rocks forever being washed clean.
What made me leave the path for a moment, I don’t remember. But just off the path behind the trunk of a dark oak and shadowed by it, was a white orchid-like flower in full-bloom, all by itself. I did not expect this flower, of course. Believe me, nothing else was flowering, not even the grass was green as yet.
It was spectacularly white and solitary at the base of that tree. The bloom was the size of a sunflower but, as I’ve told you, it looked creamy with long, full, delicate petals that curved and shaped themselves like an orchid.
I still wonder why that flower was there. It’s very likely that no one else saw the glory of that plant. If I hadn’t seen it, it would have budded, bloomed and died unnoticed. Two days later it was gone, completely.
I think we should expect God’s blessings everywhere, every day. If we don’t step off of our daily path, at least occasionally, we could miss a moment of grace.
