She’s 5’1 of grit and spit and she’s the new mayor of Chicago. Lori Lightfoot comes on the scene with an agenda that approaches the puritanical. No more payoffs to aldermen for building permits? My grandson, no longer a shoe-in for a job at the ward office? Are we all to wear red caps saying “Make Chicago Great Again?” Lori is here! MCGA caps for everyone!
I’ve lived through Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, two Daleys and a Rahm, and Oh, yes, I remember Martin Kennelly, too. But I thought the city that works did so because it runs easily on bribes and corruption, donations from citizens. Lori is saying that it’s time to stop greasing palms to get things done in Chicago. Things are going to work because the workers will have a sense of responsibility for their service to the citizens. Interesting concept. But, will it work?
I remember the first Daley responding to a statement by a reporter who stated that Chicago needed reform. “Chicago ain’t ready for reform,” Daddy Daley is said to have said. This, by the way, was a man who attended Mass daily. (No pun intended.)
Let’s see if Lori can do it!
